How These Lifestyle Changes Can Prevent Cancer for Elders

Elder Care in Highland Park NJ

Cancer is a disease that becomes more common as adults get older. The good news is that with early detection, elders are able to live a full life by getting the cancerous cells or tumors removed. But Elder-Care-in-Highland-Park-NJbefore your loved one is in need of a cancer treatment, there are several ways they can protect their health and prevent this disease from sneaking up on them. Older adults who are living alone may benefit from the assistance and encouragement of family members or an elder care provider to make these lifestyle changes for their health.

  • Watch your diet. What we eat can have a lot to do with how well our bodies are able to fight off diseases. This is especially true for seniors. They should steer clear of sugary drinks or snacks, as well as high-calorie, high-fat foods. Eating a well-balanced diet that is full of vegetables, fruits, protein, and whole grains is the best way elders can keep their bodies healthy.
  • Stay active. A mere 30 minutes of physical activity per day will not only keep the body healthy, but will also help older adults keep their weight down. If your elderly loved one has a medical condition that makes participating in physical activities difficult, speak with their doctor to determine what exercises are safe to do and which ones should be avoided. A brisk 30 minute walk is a great way to get the body moving.
  • Limit red meat consumption. Processed and red meats can do more harm to your loved one’s health than good. Limiting the elder from eating these types of meat will keep their health in good standing. If the older adult is a meat eating fanatic, encourage them to switch to lean meats, such as turkey or chicken.
  • Avoid alcohol. Drinking an excessive amount of alcohol could cause cancerous cells to build up. The best way to prevent this from happening is to limit alcohol use, drinking no more than 2 drinks for men and 1 drink for woman per day.
  • Talk to their doctor. The elder’s doctor will have more tips and advice on how to prevent cancer from developing. Discuss it with them to find out what else the senior can do.

Cancer is a frightening health condition to face, but by using these tips, your loved one will have a better chance of warding off any chance of developing cancer.
